YAMAGUCHI Katsunori (Professor)

Japan is one of the world’s leading consumers of metals, and yet it is also a country with few natural resources, relying on imports for most raw materials. It may be said that the development of metal recycling technology to revive used metals again is an all-important challenge for Japan. Certainly there is dormant potential in the discarded home appliances, electronic devices, automobiles, and so on that can be mined in our urban communities. In my research laboratory we are working in collaboration with many nonferrous metal smelting works in Tohoku on recycling technology for nonferrous metals, to make effective use of these “urban mines” and contribute to the formation of a sustainable society.
