Department of Materials Science and Engineering

We develop new materials, the key to next-generation technological innovation, to contribute to building a sustainable society.

Scientific and technological civilization in the 21st century is facing many problems on a global scale, including resources, energy, and environmental problems. As the emergence of semiconductor materials in the 20th century has created a highly information-based society, the development of new materials serves as the key to next-generation technological innovation. The department first provides the basics of materials engineering from the perspective of materials engineering and materials science. Then, it provides further specialized programs from the fields of metallic materials engineering and electronic materials engineering. We play a role in promoting new technological innovation and strive to foster human resources who can contribute to building a sustainable society.

Metallic Materials Engineering

Based on the physical and chemical characteristics of metals and ceramics in thermodynamics of materials, microstructure of materials, and structural metallic metals, we first provide expert knowledge on metallurgical engineering, material purification, and machining processes. Then, we offer courses and research related to the creation of new functional and energy-related materials; smelting and resource recycling; waste disposal; and metallurgical and materials engineering such as casting, welding, powder metallurgy, and nondestructive material evaluation.

Electronic Materials Engineering

Based on electricity and magnetism, solid-state physics, and electronic properties of materials, we provide knowledge on the motion of electrons in solid materials, and electric, magnetic, thermal, and crystalline characteristics of solid materials. Then, we offer courses and research related to the development of new electronic materials such as semiconductors, magnetic materials, and superconductors; creation of new materials and development of ultimate measurement technology; materials science and nanotechnology; and electronic materials engineering such as computational materials science, material design, and analysis.
