Iwate University Graduate School of Engineering (Doctoral Program) Student Support

Financial support for enrolled students

We offer following support for enrolled students.

・Entrance examination and examination fee
The entrance examination is held twice a year:
-September for admission in October and April
-January for admission in April

 ※Students who completed a master's program in Engineering (including those who completed the first term of Doctoral program) at our university within past three years are not required to pay the entrance examination fee.

・Registration procedure
Students who passed the examination must complete registration to reserve their seat including necessary payment such as matriculation and tuition fees.
 ※Students who completed a master's program in Engineering (including those who completed the first term of Doctoral program) at our university within past three years are not required to pay the matriculation fee.
Iwate University Tuition Exemption Program for Doctoral Program Students (Kenkyusuiko-kyoryokuin)

This program is aimed to encourage the research of exceptionally able doctoral students and to promote the quality of research at our University. Students who are selected as a KENKYU SUIKO KYORYOKUIN, a specially assigned researcher, in this program, may receive the half amount of tuition waiver for the first semester or the second semester.

Who is eligible for this program? ・・・Mainly working students
Application period ・・・April and October
Adoption rate ・・・100%(as of the first semester, 2013)
※1 Great opportunity for working students!
※2 Research assistant(RA) students cannot apply for this program.

Research Assistant (RA)

Research Assistants (Students) are hired to assist researches conducted by university professors. A legitimate salary as a working graduate student is paid to RA.

Who is eligible for this program? ・・・Enrolled students except working students.
Application period ・・・April (Note: Students who enroll in October may apply in November of the same year)
Adoption rate ・・・100%(as of the first semester, 2013)
※1 Working students cannot apply for the program.
※2 The maximum work hour is 115 hours per semester.(The hourly wage is 1,300 yen)
※3 Students eligible for this program may also apply for Teaching Assist (TA). (The hourly wage is 1,300 yen.)

Fellowship

This is aimed to promote engineering research by subsidizing the hiring expense of research students.

Who is eligible for this program? ・・・Enrolled students
Application period ・・・May and November
Adoption rate ・・・100%(as of May 2013)
※1 Employment status: part-time worker (The maximum work hour is 20 hours per week including RA work hours).
※2 Employment period is less than a year. (It is possible to reapply.) The annual wage is 500,000~800,000 yen.

Exemption from Tuition Fee Payment

Students who demonstrate outstanding academic records and have financial difficulties may be exempt from half or all amount of tuition fee upon request.

Application period ・・・July (for second semester's tuition fee) and December (for first semester's tuition fee)
Adoption rate ・・・About 85%(Exemption rate of Japanese fiscal year 2012)

Scholarships

20~30 scholarships for international students are offered annually. The Japanese government (MEXT), Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), municipal organizations, international associations and foundations are offering such scholarships.
※ Many of scholarships indicated above except a part of scholarships offered by MEXT have a condition where a student must be accepted by a Japanese educational institution before proceeding with a scholarship application.

Travel Expenses Support for Research Presentation Abroad (Kaigaikenkyuhappyo-Shien)

This aid is to support travel expenses of international conferences held in abroad. This is aimed at every graduate student in Iwate University in order to promote research cooperation with researchers and students in foreign countries.

Application period ・・・Around May every year
※Stipend is up to 150,000 yen per trip

Support for student exchange programs with institutions of international academic exchange agreements.

 ※50,000yen per person
