Summary The largest scale soil and groundwater contamination in the Tohoku Region is present at a site on the border between Iwate and Aomori Prefectures where waste is dumped illegally. The soil and groundwater there is contaminated by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) contained in the waste. Because it is difficult to allocate costs for cleaning up pollution in mountainous areas, an inexpensive and environmentally friendly cleaning method is needed. I am therefore focusing my research efforts on developing techniques to identify and activate microorganisms that degrade pollutants present on contaminated sites. I am also studying low-cost techniques using sunlight to clean the contamination caused by VOCs.
