Summary Machine tools are used to manufacture machine parts. My laboratory is engaged in the development of various kinds of machine tools. Our current research is directed toward the development of automated die finishing equipment (for the dies used for producing parts). Dies that have complex shapes are generally finished manually by experienced technicians. However, because it is predicted that the shapes of dies will become increasingly complex in the future, it may become difficult to finish them manually. We are developing finishing equipment that uses three piezoelectric stack actuators (actuators that expand and contract with the application of a voltage) and diamond compounds to make minute vibrations describing an 8-shape path that can finish the surface of a die to a mirror-like shine.
