Summary A polymer is a giant molecule constructed from smaller structural units called monomers. New polymer materials can be developed by combining monomers in different ways, combining different types of monomers, and using multiple monomers. While petroleum is the main ingredient of most polymers that have been synthesized, my research has focused on the synthesis of polymers without depending on petroleum. The properties of polymers I have developed vary according to molecular design, ranging from high-temperature resistance, excellent mechanical properties, good electrical insulation, lipophilicity, and hydrophilicity. They are widely used, for instance, in automobile parts, building materials and in electric insulation materials for components of computers.
