Summary Any surface, however flat and smooth it may look, contains micro-bumps and micro-pits of all kinds: some surfaces are rough, others are smooth, some contain scratch marks, and others have deep pitting over the surface. Currently, surface finishing is based on the results of tests, experience and hunches. In my research, I am working to develop models and evaluation methods for surface roughness, which are essential for numerical calculations to achieve the optimal surface finish. I also conduct research into the tribology of surfaces of machines using water instead of oil to prevent surface damage, and the tribology of water.
