Summary Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), which is one of the key technologies for still more severe temperature, are employed in gas turbine blades to protect the substrate from high temperature environment. The simple techniques and new techniques using laser speckle and resonance ultrasound spectroscopy for the high temperature mechanical properties of TBCs are developed. The mechanical properties, elastic modulus, strength and so on, of TBCs are resolved by the techniques. The design of the coating is also performed to extend the durability and to enhance the reliability and safety for the components with the coatings.
